Large Pair of Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Pugs Dogs C.1880

19th century
Description

A charming pair of Staffordshire pugs, each slightly varied in pose and realistically modelled. Cream ground with black painted muzzle and collar, yellow eyes, gilded dog tag and gently shaded fur to the ears and feet. Vent hold to the base, unmarked, c.1880.

They measure 27cm-27.3cm (10 5/8"-10 3/4") high, 17.5cm (6 7/8") front to back and 14.5cm (5 1/2") wide across the front feet.

Condition is very good with no damage or restoration. Very light surface wear to the cream ground overall. The right facing dog has a small enamel loss to the lower part of his muzzle, and to some of the yellow of his irises. The left facing dog has a small enamel flake loss to his right ear and also a little to his irises and both have a bit of rubbing to the gilding on the collar tag. One has a small firing line across the back foot and the other a small firing line behind one ear, mentioned for completeness.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
