Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Napoleon III style emerged during Frances Second Empire period from 1852 to 1870, characterised by eclectic revivals of earlier French decorative arts. Girandoles from this era often feature elaborate gilt bronze metalwork, twin or triple scrolled candle arms, integrated mirrored backplates, and classic decorative elements such as ribbon bows and tassel motifs.

Traditional 19th-century French girandoles were manufactured from cast bronze or brass, which was subsequently finished with fire-gilding or ormolu techniques. These wall lights frequently incorporate small silvered glass reflective mirrors, chased scrolling details, and candle sockets suited for wax candles or later electrical fittings.

Authentic period pieces exhibit precise hand-chased detailing, distinct weight characteristic of solid bronze, and natural surface wear or patination to the gilding. Inspection of the reverse often reveals traditional construction methods, such as original iron mounting bars, square threaded nuts, and period glass with subtle foxing.

Antique girandoles are commonly positioned in pairs flanking an entryway mirror, situated above a mantelpiece, or installed alongside wall artwork to frame a focal point. Their metallic gilded finish creates a strong visual contrast against dark contemporary paint tones or subtle textured wall coverings.

Gilt bronze should be dusted routinely using a dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to reach recessed relief work. Liquid cleaners, abrasive metal polishes, and water should be avoided, as these can strip the original gilded surface and cause oxidation to the underlying metal.
