A superb Irish silver coffee pot from the George the 2nd period made around1730 by the renown coffee pot and hollow wear maker William Williamson. This beautiful example started life in Dublin almost three hundred years ago. The later decoration we estimate was done around 1810, is to some purist collectors sacrilege. We say it is quintessentially Irishwork, was carried out in Ireland by a very accomplished silversmith to drag what would have been seen as a somewhat boring piece of silver into vogue during the period of rococo revival. The the original 1730s cartouche either side of the the main body, bear original coat of arms/armorial of the period. The later rococo revival decoration is sublime, bearing traditional Irish mask decoration, shell and swag, and a rare hunting scene, the lid has a pineapple/artichoke finial. Yes it is not a purists piece, however it iis so beautifully Irish with a well loved history proudly displaying its journey through three hundred years in its decor. Half inch from the handle hinge to the right of the pot is the mark of William Williamson in a later chased flower head. A superb tactile and decorative piece of Irish silver that has survived in wonderful condition and is probably one of the best later decorated early 18th Irish century coffee pots on the market. A truly stunning piece. Bearing scratch marks to the base indicating its substantial weight of 34.18 oz Troy. On view and for sale at our showroom in Station Antiques Appledore Rail Station Appledore Kent.
