17th Century Oak Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

A superb English oak chest of drawers dating from the late 17th Century. They are made of solid oak with panelled sides and four long drawers with attractive moulded fronts. As was typical with chests of this time, the second drawer down is considerably deeper than the others. The chest has a planked top and stands on simple block feet. The drawers have brass pull handles with star shaped plates and matching escutcheons which, although put on later, have been on the chest of drawers a good time and suit the style and age.

The drawers run on 'side runners' - a sign of their age. They open and close smoothly with just a slight stiffness in the second drawer but nothing untoward. They have been well maintained over the years and there has been some restoration to the sides of the drawers and the runners. The drawers are generally clean and tidy inside.

They are an excellent quality set and have been well looked after and maintained over the years. The chest is strong and sturdy and has developed a wonderful rich aged patina. It has picked up various small knocks, marks and signs of age and use and some old stains on the top but nothing detrimental. There are various small repairs and restorations but nothig untoward. It has a good solid back with a new piece of wood along the top to strengthen it. The chest has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
