Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The twin lids open to reveal a well-fitted interior with gilt hinges; a shaped pen rack; navy-tooled leather note "keeps"; a gilt-brass mounted cut-glass dish and a mechanical inkwell which opens and closes to keep the ink from spilling. The engraved brass 'makers' label is for Schafer of London, a known retailer of Betjemann products. 11x11x2.75ins.

This comes with a signed photograph of Prince Arthur of Connaught dated 1889. (He was third son of Queen Victoria and became Governor of Canada) It is possible that this superb quality box was owned by him...
