Gents antique silver wrist watch, Morath of Liverpool.

The watch has an unsigned Cyma hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner silver cover.

The watch measures 34mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the fixed wire lugs. The case is silver and there are Continental hallmarks inside the case backs together with Chester hallmarks for 1920 together with an importer's mark for James Weir. James Weir acted as an assay agent for foreign manufacturers who did not have a British address from which to submit items to the assay office. Weir's company received packages of watch cases, stamped them with the registered sponsor's mark, sent them into the Glasgow Assay Office for assay and hallmarking and then returned them abroad. This particular case is in good condition. The winding crown is a later replacement.

The bevelled watch glass has minor marking but is very acceptable.

The dial is signed by the original retailers of the watch, Morath Brothers of Liverpool. The Morath Brothers originated from the Black Forest region and they are listed as having shops in Dale Street from 1848 onwards. They sold a range of clocks and watches but specialised in cuckoo clocks.

Originally the hands on this particular watch would have had infill but this has been removed over the years. The dial has a shade or two of age related darkening.

The watch has a later leather strap with deployment clasp.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
