A Rare Celtic Limestone Marker. C750 -12bc

17th century
Description

A rare Celtic limestone marker probably from Gaul, France C750-12BC.

The marker would have originally been set into a wall and depicts three Celtic god like figures carved in a very abstract design.

When Julius Caesar conquered Gaul, he renamed many of the Celtic gods with roman ones and you can still find similarities in the compositions of sculpture between Celtic and roman gods today.

The face of the carving is very crusty and has lost detail from the many years of pollution and weathering. The back of the stone has lost some of its depth and there are relatively recent tool marks probably from someone who has chiseled the loose stone from the back.

Considering the age this limestone relief is in very good condition.

Provenance - Acquired from a private collection in Grasse, France.
