RARE EXCEPTIONAL GEORGIAN LADIES KNEEHOLE DESK CUBAN MAHOGANY LONDON MAKER SIGN
DESCRIPTION:
This is a truly magnificent quality small George III Cuban Mahogany Kneehole writing desk which is signed by the London maker:
'S & H Jewells, Holborn, London'
Dating to circa 1830 and of outstanding patination.
The piece is made from rich Cuban Red Mahogany and it is also completely Oak lined!
The desktop has a crisply carved decorative foliate boarder with gadrooned edging, which rises above a full length deep working drawer, leading down to a small frieze drawer, and flanked on both sides by 3 deep graduating drawers, and centred in the middle by a lockable kneehole security cupboard.
The quality of this piece really cannot be captured by photographs alone! It is simply outstanding!
There are 8 original locks, 8 original brass lock escutcheons and 8 quality sold brass drop handles (19th Century replacements)
The piece is extremely heavy, although only of a beautifully elegant and small, manageable proportion.
The piece is stamped twice with the makers mark, once in the drawer lining in stencil, and the other in the same drawer with a brass oval plaque.
Offered in an overall fabulous original condition commensurate with age, this piece will add a huge smile to any deserving buyer.
S & H Jewell Information:
S and H Jewell were fine quality cabinet makers who were established in 1830. They were a family business who worked from their premises at Little Queen Street, Holborn, in London and then later to Parker Street, LONDON. They are recorded to have sold furniture to the Arts and Crafts home, Standen House, East Grinstead, Sussex and stated on the receipt dated 1st May 1894, states the company was founded in 1830 but there are not many records of their earlier pieces. They also restored early pieces of antique and resold them in their London shop.
