Masons ironstone was patented by Charles James Mason in 1813 in Staffordshire, England, as a durable alternative to imported porcelain. The Pagoda pattern drew heavily on European fascination with Asian art, featuring stylized oriental architectural landscapes printed under the glaze.

Ironstone is a type of dense, vitrified earthenware formulated with slag, clay, ground flint, and feldspar. The blue decoration was applied via tissue-transfer printing using cobalt oxide pigments before being fired with a clear protective glaze.

Authentic pieces generally feature impressed or printed backstamps on the underside, such as Masons Patent Ironstone China. True ironstone is relatively heavy, cool to the touch, and exhibits a blue-grey undertone in the glaze rather than pure stark white.
