In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
It has a small internal box with a sliding drawer below and it comes with its original working lock and key which hides a special trick - the lock has an alarmed bell which rings when the key is turned which would have prevented anybody stealing your belongings on board the ship!
It is in very good condition for its age and has a superb colour and grain. It strong and sturdy with some minor signs of age and use, some small knocks and surface marks here and there but noting detrimental. It is missing the brass escutcheon around the key hole and there is some minor damage to one brass corner piece. The box is generally clean and tidy inside, it has been cleaned and lightly polished and it displays beautifully.
