A splendid humours satirical engraving depicting the famous prima donna Elizabeth Billington (1768-1818). Mrs Billington was the most popular and famous opera singer of her day, famed for her wide vocal range and was much in demand at Covent Garden and Drury Lane in the early nineteenth century.
Depicted here as Mandane, daughter of King Xerxes in Thomas Arne's opera Artaxerxes, Gilray's caricature shows her in this role singing with great gusto.
Originally published in 1801 this prints is one of a later edition commonly known as "Bohn Edition prints" published in 1851 by Henry G. Born.
A hand coloured copper plate engraving on a wove paper in a very good and clean state.
Within a beautiful period ogee birds-eye maple wood veneered frame in first class condition.
