Victorian Oak Dining Table & 2 Leaves, 8ft 4/seats 10

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: The Antique Furniture Company

A super late Victorian wind-out extending dining table in quarter-sawn oak with two original leaves and dating to c.1880. In the Arts & Crafts taste it has a rectangular top with canted corners and a moulded edge and stands on four ring-turned tapering baluster shaped legs with brass caps and brown pottery castors. This family size 48in wide table smoothly extends from just over 5ft 6in to 8ft 4in using a Joseph Fitter ‘screw expander’ winding mechanism allowing it to seat up to 10 people (or more at a squeeze) if using both leaves. This table is unusual in that the legs of table are set back from edge of the top by 9in at the side.

With beautiful colour and grain to the timbers it has been recently polished and waxed by hand using traditional materials to restore a rich dark honey colour to the top. Medullary rays from the quarter-sawn cut of the oak produce the attractive golden ‘tiger grain’ pattern. Minor marks from age and use, some repairs and replacements to the mouldings...
