Antique 'Eagle-gul' Teke Turkmen Torba, Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

Description

This magnificent torba, with its cochineal or lac dye ground, is a rare type referred to as the 'eagle-gul' group. The reason for this name is given to torbas and chuvals which have half-guls disappearing under the top and bottom borders. Made by Teke Turkmen during the mid 19th century, the torba is in pretty good overall condition for its age, although I have had the sides very slightly reduced due to damage and new selvedges sewn-in.
