Antique Afshar Tribal Rug, Kerman Province, Southern Persia.

Description

On a soft camel coloured ground, can be seen a field of 'dragon & phoenix' symbols in very stylized form - symbolizing the fight between good and evil. The Afshar originated in Eastern Turkistan and arrived in southern Persia between the 11th and 15th centuries, bringing their dragon symbolism with them. Rarely found on rugs, the dragon & phoenix is very occasionally found on their storage bags. The wool quality is superb - soft and glossy - and the colours are all from vegetable dyes. The rug is in excellent condition with only a few minor repairs.
