Description

Geo.II silver lidded tankard, made in Newcastle by a highly regarded maker of tankards and mugs in particular. Of decorated baluster form with a domed lid/cover, a magnificent handle to the body and chairback thumbpiece to the cover. The inscription to the cartouche is a touching testimony to the recipient for his generosity to the poor of Shipley Yorkshire. John Langlands (the silversmith) was only in partnership with John Goodrick from 1754 until 1757 on Goodrick's death, this makes this fine piece even more interesting.

Georgian silver tankards are lidded or open drinking vessels crafted in Great Britain during the reigns of King George I through King George IV between 1714 and 1830.
