Victorian Anglo-indian Vizagapatam Tortoise Shell & Ivory Box C.1860

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

Always highly sought-after due to their highly decorative appearance, these boxes were made in the Vizagapatam region of British India for the English market around 1860.

This one has a couple of very large panels of antique tortoiseshell to the beautifully domed top, quite wonderful contrasted against the Ivory straps.

The superb craftsmanship can be seen with the intricate fretwork lace panels around the sides of the box, these are clearly where damage can occur over the last 150 years, there are (miraculously) only two tiny losses to the reticulated work.

The box carcase is made from Sandalwood which can be seen from the inside, there is a minor age crack to the bottom of the interior, quiet usual with this wood and certainly of such an age.

The box stands on four wonderful carved Lion's paw feet and the underside covered in a beautifully vibrant red velvet.

Considered to be in excellent condition with the normal few minor defects usual in these boxes (a few minor chips and old hairlines & and the points mentioned earlier). Measures 8 3/4" x 5 3/4" x 3" tall.
