In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 1900s.
It has two drawers with the original turned wooden knobs. There are two strips of wood on the top which the press itself sits between.
The press is cast iron painted black with some gold line detailing and remnants of its original maker's label. It is a simple design with a large screw handle lowering and raising the pressing plate.
It is in good condition throughout and is certainly very usable. There are signs of age and use and the base has picked up many knocks, scuffs and marks. There are ink stains on the top and the wood below the press is a darker colour than the rest which has gently sun-faded over time. There are signs of historic woodworm in the base which has all benn treated as a precaution and has not affected it structurally or aesthetically. The paint has faded and flaked in places on the press but overall it displays well. It has a charming look and it has been thoroughly cleaned and lightly waxed and is ready for use.
