An early nineteenth century copper engraved portrait of The Honourable Thomas Erskine.
Engraved by William Sharp (1749 1824) after a work by the famous English artist Richard Cosway (1742-1821) the leading portrait painter of the Regency period.
Thomas Erskine was the most enlightened liberal of his times, a member of the Whig party, Lord Chancellor of the United Kingdom. He was later created a peer by the Prince of Wales.
A three quarter length bust portrait, a handsome head turned and looking away to right, wearing a dark double-breasted coat with high collar and white cravat.
Within a printed escutcheon.

Housed within a period polished fruitwood veneered frame with inner sanded hardwood slip with patination.
