Dutch Parquetry Side or Centre Table, Circa 1690

17th century
For Sale by WelshAntiques
Description

Exceptional Dutch centre table, the parquetry top with an elaborate design of geometric motifs within circles, with oyster veneer infills, over an inlaid frieze, raised on twist-turned column legs united by an inlaid elongated X-framed stretcher, and supported on ball feet.

The table is in superb condition, with very minor losses to the veneers, and has a fine surface polish.

Basically circa 1690, with possible 19th century alterations.

Although apparently in substantially original condition, the frieze has at some point been expertly cut down one side and a drawer fitted. The top, which is of superb quality, has been inlaid on its underside, perhaps indicating that it was formerly (or formerly intended to be) the door of a very large cupboard.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 17th century during the Baroque period, a Dutch parquetry table features a wooden surface decorated with geometric veneer patterns, often supported by spirally turned legs and shaped stretchers.

Craftsmen typically utilised regional and imported hardwoods such as walnut, oak, kingwood, and fruitwoods, employing intricate marquetry or parquetry techniques secured with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut joinery, hand-sawn veneers of irregular thickness, natural unevenness in the spiral turnings, and dark oxidisation on unpolished under-surfaces.

Position the piece as a statement focal point in an entry hall, study, or living area, pairing its detailed geometric patterns with simple contemporary ceramics or minimal lighting to maintain visual balance.

Keep the item in a environment with stable humidity levels to prevent veneer lifting, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly to protect the timber finish.
