Antique Broadhurst Clarkson & Co Library Telescope on Military Tripod

19th century
Description

A superb antique library telescope on a wooden folding military tripod with fascinating provenance. The telescope was made by 'Broadhurst Clarkson & Co' and dates to the late 1800s / early 1900s. It is made of brass with a black lacquer finish on the main tube and has an extendable brass eyepiece which focuses the telescope using the rack and pinion knob on the side. The telescope is approximately 46 1/2" (118cm) long and stands 66" (168cm) high.

The telescope sits atop a tall wooden folding tripod with brass rod and fixing plate below the telescope tube. The fixing bracket which allows the telescope to swivel completely around and move up and down. The tripod bears the military stamp and was issued by the War Department in WWII for the then owner, Mr G Colman-Green, to spot aircraft with on top of Norwich castle.

The telescope comes in its original wooden box, painted with Mr Colman-Green's name. Inside the box are some of the telescope's original paper and cloth wrapping. It also comes with an additional Broadhurst Clarkson & Co eyepiece tube and an additional sun glass. The box measures approximately 40 1/2" (103cm) x 6" (15cm) x 7 1/2" (19cm)

Both the telescope and stand are in excellent condition and display beautifully - a real statement piece. The telescope has clearly been well looked after and there are no major damages, it has only suffered some minor dinks and small knocks to the tube. The lenses are undamaged and produce a clear and crisp image with an incredible range. Please bare in mind the telescope is 100 years old and the lenses will not be like new. There are some small specks of dirt on the lenses but it is perfectly useable. The box has picked up some knocks and scuffs over time but is strong and sturdy with no major damages.
