Good 18th Century Mahogany "Verge" Bracket Clock

18th century
Description

A fine 18th century mahogany BRACKET CLOCK of compact size and in good original condition.

The case is typically George III, with its "bell" top; set of four cast brass "pineapple" finials and cast carrying handle. To the sides are twin silk-backed ormolu panels cast with cherubs whilst the front door features similar ormolu spandrels.

The 8-day movement, with its engraved backplate retains its original verge escapement striking and repeating hours on a bell, whilst the good dial has Strike/Silent control in the arch and a third gilded hand, to automatically show the date. This date is engraved to the inside of the silvered chapter-ring. Signed: John Taylor to the cartouche below "XIII". 18ins high.

***John Taylor worked at 41, Upper Moorfields, London from 1784 until 1788

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
