A lovely Fruitwood quarter striking bracket clock by Tiffany Number 393.
The substantial case having finely cast and chased gilt bezel, Corinthian columns, handles and glazed rear door.
Although the movement and dial clearly state that the maker is Tiffany and is numbered 393 it is almost certain that clock was made by the eminent clockmaking company Dent of London. The beautifully made clock movement is substantial, the quarter striking mechanism utilises one very large spring and a clever lever work to "Shuttle" the pin barrel perfectly in time to ensure that the Westminster tune is always in synchronisation with the hands. The "double rack system is similar to the grande Sonnier clock of the Biedermeier period.
It is known that there was only a limited run of these clocks and later movements numbered 600 onwards stated a date of 1881 as a patent
