'the Young Shrimpers' Oil Painting By Edwin Ellis Rba 1841-1895

A fine oil on canvas by highly regarded Victorian period artist Edwin Ellis. The painting is titled in pencil on the reverse and on the frame: ''The young shrimpers'' and the scene shows a beach, a figure to the fore with shrimp net. Seagulls follow the shrimpers as the waves break on the shore. The painting has a great deal of atmosphere and is typical of the artist''s impressionist type painting. The painting is signed to the lower right. Edwin Ellis was a Nottingham born painter who studied under Henry Dawson. He settled in London in the 1860''s and exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Sussex Street Gallery where he showed nearly 100 works. In 1893 a comprehensive collection of his works were displayed at the Nottingham Castle Museum. The painting has been professionally cleaned and some very minor repairs made.
