Oak Longcase Clock by Lynch of Newbury

18th century
Description

A highly desirable oak longcase clock of good proportions and colour from the county of Berkshire.

The 8 day duration movement striking the hours on a bell and with a 12" square full brass dial with silvered brass chapter ring showing Roman Numerals and Arabic minutes. Also with a plain silvered brass centre incorporating, sunken seconds, a rare centre date feature and a very useful strike/silent mechanism above number XII. Also with blued steel hands and the makers name and place of work engraved to the base of the chapter ring, Anthony Lynch, Newbury. The corners with typical brass spandrels of the period.

The oak case with good colour to the long trunk door and base and standing on a single plinth. The flat top hood with oak angle pillars and wooden capitals to the glazed hood door and repeated to the rear of the hood with quarter pillars.

Note: Anthony Lynch is listed as working in the late 18th century. There are two features on the dial of this clock that are very rarely seen on an 18th century provincial longcase clock with a square dial. Firstly the centre date and secondly the strike/silent mechanism. A rare example.
