This is a very fine English fusee 8 day carriage clock signed on a cartouche by James Murrey ,30 Cornhill , London number 1248 London and will date circa 1830.He is described and a watch and chronometer maker and it is interesting to note that a Thomas Cole Clock on page 96 of Cole clock number 1550 and illustrated and described in J.B. Hawkins reference book "Thomas Cole and Victorian Clockmaking" has fusee movement which was provided by James Murrey.
It would therefore be appropriate to assume that both business used each others services when required.
The hump back style case was popular with Cole at the time and the unusual folding handle is used on a recorded Thomas Cole Clock No 541 Illustrated on page Derek Roberts fine book on "Carriage and other travelling Clocks "
I have to say that the engraving is amongst the finest I have ever seen and certainly of the quality of Thomas Cole (I have owned several examples in the past"
The images should show the overall quality and please note the shuttered rear door and time adjustment from the rear of the case.
This clock is in beautiful condition and retains virtually all of its original fire gilding.
The 3 1/2 inch silvered dial is in original order and the numerals are painted
The finely made chain driven movement of 8 day duration with lever escapement and maintaining power which has been professionally serviced and is in perfect working order.
This really is a fabulous of the very highest quality and will delight the most discerning buyer
The clock is 8 inches tall to the very top of the handle ( 6 2/4 handle down.It is 5 1/4 inches wide and 2 1/4 inches deep
I would describe the overall condition as out standing and ready to be displayed.
