Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The handle has a wonderful tablet of iridescent Mother of Pearl shell on either side, the front with highly decorative engraved decoration surrounding the sterling silver cartouche to the centre with a very ornate monogram, I think C J R.
The English silver hallmark is good and clear (incorporating the highly sought-after Queen Victoria's head mark) for Sheffield 1877 together with the makers mark, J.L for John Linegar.

Of course having this original leather bound case or box is an absolute bonus and gold embossed with the Goldsmith Alliance Limited, Cornhill, London.
Absolutely top-notch in superb condition. The box measures 4" long and the knife measures 6" in length when fully opened.
