Description

This is only the second time in many years of being in the antiques business that I have come across this wonderful figural equestrian inkwell.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian novelty equestrian inkwell is a functional writing accessory produced during the late nineteenth century, shaped around horse-riding motifs such as horses, stirrups, or horseshoes, designed to hold ink on a library table or writing desk.

These inkwells were typically cast in heavy yellow brass or bronze using sand casting techniques, followed by hand-chasing to detail features such as mane texture, straps, and decorative gadrooning.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patination in crevices, seams consistent with historical casting methods, appropriate age-related wear on the underside, and functional hinges or threaded fittings appropriate to the period.

An equestrian inkwell functions well as a decorative accent on an office desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf, adding historical texture and a classic theme to traditional or transitional spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip historical patina. Gentle conservation wax may be applied sparingly to protect the metal finish from oxidisation.
