1930'S Art Deco Prowling Panther Figure.

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Art Deco World
Description

An impressive and large 1930's Art Deco Panther figure on a tri colour marble base. Wonderful patina and in great condition this figure shows real quality. Beautiful detailing on the figure, a real sense of muscle tones and movement from the configurations of the grains and swirls of the wood, very cleverly done. Normally these figures are in spelter so this is very unusual to be done in wood but works perfectly. Originating from France, unsigned in great condition.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco animalier sculptures of the 1930s typically feature sleek, streamlined representations of wild animals, particularly predatory cats like panthers and tigers. These pieces emphasised movement, muscular tension, and stylised geometry, reflecting the eras fascination with speed, modernism, and exoticism.

Sculptors during this period frequently utilised carved stone, terracotta, bronze, and patinated spelter. Figures were often mounted on multi-coloured variegated marble, onyx, or portor bases to create visual weight and contrast.

Authentic pieces generally display distinctive stylised muscular contours rather than anatomical realism, often accompanied by heavy marble or stone plinths. Look for signs of age-appropriate wear on the underside of the base, precise carving or casting details, and period-appropriate mounting hardware.

Position the sculpture on a dark wood sideboard, a mantelpiece, or within a curated bookshelf to act as a dramatic focal point. Its strong geometric lines and natural stone tones pair exceptionally well with minimalist modern furniture, brass accents, and rich jewel-toned backdrops.

Dust the figure regularly with a clean, soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to prevent dust accumulation in carved crevices. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive polishes, or excessive water, which can damage the surface finish and dissolve marble binders over time.
