This exceptional and very rare pair of Japanese double gourd vases date from the Japanese Meiji-period (1868 - 1912) and are an excellent example of shibayama on lacquer on a bronze base.
The ornate design displays colourful leaves and blossom made from different materials including mother-of-pearl. On one vase a pair of chickens and their young feeding amongst the foliage whilst the other vase features a dove swooping through the leaves. The vases rest on a dark wood display stand.
