Georgian Mahogany Fretwork Mirror with Lord Mayor of London Label

18th century
Description

A handsome antique Georgian mahogany and parcel gilt fretwork framed wall mirror with an interesting label to the back stating that the mirror was bought from the Lord Mayor of London. It features a scroll pediment with a pierced gilt ho-ho bird and a rectangular bevelled mirror plate with moulded surround and cusped upper corners. It’s a pretty mid-eighteenth century example with attractive patina dating from circa 1750.

The label to the back is difficult to decipher, however we think it says:

“Bought from Sir Richard Brocas Lord Mayor of London. Sale at Gloucester Gate London W”

Sir Richard Brocas was Lord mayor of London in 1729, which could tie in with the date of the mirror if it was purchased at his estate sale.
