Description

This is an excellent original example of the Verners Patenet MK VIII. It is fully functioning, has a brass case and is mounted with lanyard ring. The glass face and numbered brass outer ring are perfectly intact. The lid is signed by the London maker, " J H Steward Ltd. Strand, London".

The optician, James Henry Steward, founded his business in 1852 and produced an extensive range of items for military use advertised as instruments for ‘Reconnoitring, Sketching, Night Marching, Signally, Gun Laying’.

In the middle of the 19th century the business was appointed as the optician to Her Majesty's British & Foreign Governments, the National Rifle Associations of England, India, Canada & the Colonies and the National Artillery Association.

It is complete with brown leather case (wear commensurate with age and use) with hinged top and buckle fastener. A great clean example in excellent condition. 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 7/8" thick. The case measuring 4" x 3" x 2".
