These works descended, from the sitters, through the Lloyd family for almost 180 years until 2019.
 
These exquisite portraits depict Edmund Lloyd and his wife Catherine (nee Hume). Highly attractive, as much attention is paid to the facial features as is the excellent treatment of the attire; Catherine’s evening dress is defined with lightness and dexterity. The elegantly draped tartan sash is a tribute to her Scottish heritage (the Hume surname derives from Hume Castle, Berwickshire, and its adjacent estates). These elegant portraits are the epitome of the post Regency British portrait.
 
Edmund Lloyd was born on 15 April 1796 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, the son of Ann Vokins (c.1760-1818) and Samuel Andrews Lloyd (1757-?) who were both Quakers. Samuel and Ann married in April 1779 at the Quaker Meeting House in Newbury. Both Samuel Lloyd and Ann Vokins were from wealthy families; before the marriage Samuel had signed a contract covenanting the sum of £30,000 to be divided...
