Description

A Pristine mid 19th century Precision Regulator by the eminent W F Evans of Halesworth, Birmingham.
The clockmakers Evans of Handsworth were one of the top makers of clocks in the Victorian period.
John Houghton, formerly the foreman of Boulton & Watt at the Soho factory, took over their clock-making business in 1805 after the decision of the firm to discontinue clock manufacture, calling it The Soho Clock Factory. Houghton was joined by his son-in-law William Frederick Evans and, when the former decided to retire in 1843, Evans continued as WF Evans & Son.
They made many different styles and types of clocks but they are primarily known for the selection of skeleton clocks that included a number modelled on various ecclesiastical buildings, particularly those of York and Westminster cathedrals, with three-train eight-bell chiming movements, being the most spectacular.
Evans also produced a clock based on the Scott Memorial in Edinburgh to show at the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park in 1851. He went on to make various differing designs of the clock for retail of which this is one.
The faultless solid mahogany case is very heavy is is fixed via a large steel plate to the backplate. The Wall mounted regulator case is very well made and has no knocks dents or scrapes and has been professionally cleaned to reveal its original shellac finish. The drum head hood with beautifully carved scrollwork to the sides is all the ornamentation this clock needs. Inside the case is the original 1/4 inch thick plate glass mirror, this original mirror having a series of blemishes to the reflective layer as is so common with 170 year old mirrors. I have purposely retained then original mirror so that its authenticity can be kept.
The substantial deadbeat six spoke regulator movement has been fully overhauled and has been carefully polished using an age old technique using chalk. Although labour intensive, this technique gives the brass a finish that cannot be replicated will modern abrasive compounds and uses a method that is closer to its original treatment.
The ebony pendulum rod finishes with a heavy cylindrical brass bob with fine thread adjustable knob to the base. The driving weight having the same highly polished cylindrical case.
The lovely untouched 12 inch dial is unrubbed and retains its original inkwork
These wall mounted regulators are very pleasing to look at and are quire rare in such a wonderful condition. This clock comes with a full three years guarantee for your peace of mind in your investment.
