Original Mid Century Abstract Oil Painting by William Ernst Burwell, Frsa

1940 - 1960
Description

A stunning midcentury abstract oil on board by the listed artist William Ernst Burwell (1911-1974). Beatifully painted with heavily applied textures and other abstract techniques. We have obtained several of the artists works from his studio. Mounted in possibly a reused gesso and painted frame by the artist. Painting is unsigned but we can gurantee its authenticity. Condition of the painting is very good. The frame is slightly distressed with bumped corners, some marks and some loss to the gesso but displays the painting nicely.

The painter and stage designer William Ernst Burwell, FRSA was born in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire. He studied at Hull College of Art and Brighton School of Art and showed at the RA, NEAC and elsewhere in Britain and overseas. From 1940-1946 he served with the Essex Regiment and was subsequently employed at Pinewood Studios. The many film sets of the 50s, 60s and early 70s on which he worked included 'Oliver Twist' and the 'Black Narcissus'. His work is in the permanent collection of the Imperial War Museum. 'Bunny' Burwell was a founder member of The Colne Group and also a member of The Free Painters Group. He lived at Turk's Head Court, Eton.
