Description

Splendid late 19th.c. French giltwood sofa or double end chaise c.1870. Just over seven feet long and of strikingly unusual design with two raised ends either side of a lowered centre. Superb giltwood frame with carved floral detail to the tops of the backrests which also feature small semi circular panels with flaming torches against a silk ground. Moulded rails descending to a beautifully carved and pierced acanthus leaf centre splat and rollover arms with moulded fronts. Over a sprung seat with moulded gesso detail to the apron. Turned, carved and fluted legs front and rear with papyrus leaf detail and raised on the original brass and leather castors. Obvious split to the upholstery on the seat, otherwise very good unrestored condition with only minor damage to the gesso and original gilding.
