C19th 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze statue , after the antique,"The Dancing Faun with Clappers" .

Good large-scale bronze figure of the iconic woodland Faun from Greco-Romano mythology. Depicted with pointed ears , tail and frenzied facial expression, dancing with cymbals in his hands whilst his right foot rests upon a 'scabellum' ( an Ancient Greek percussion instrument) .

The original ancient marble torso attributed to Praxiteles of Athens , was first recorded in the C17th in the collection of the Duke of Tuscany , thought to have had the head and arms replaced and modelled by the great Renaissance master Michelangelo. Now in the Uffizi, Florence, Italy .

Versions of this iconic statue grace the great collections and museums of the world, including a large copy cast after Massimiliano Soldani Benz (1648-1740) in the grounds of Blenheim Place , Oxfordshire, seat of the Dukes of Marlborough.

This well-cast bronze version depicted entirely naked and raised on an integral oval base with cast trailing ivy detail , an ivy-wrapped tree-trunk to the side . The whole sculpture having a consistent dark green patination to the bronze . The faun having well-defined musculature and veining to the skin , the hands with realistic sinews and finger-nail details. The detailed bronze casting skilfully conveying the movement , power and frenzy of the celebrating mythological creature .

In excellent original condition with only minor highlights to the hair from handling.
