Spelter is a zinc-based alloy that was cast into detailed moulds and treated with lacquer or patination to emulate bronze, gaining widespread popularity in Western Europe during the late nineteenth century.

These items were manufactured by pouring molten zinc alloy into bronze piece-moulds, after which the cold metal surface was finished with gilding, cold painted lacquers, or patination to imitate cast bronze.

Spelter is significantly lighter and softer than cast bronze, displays white or greyish metal where scratched or worn, and typically features hollow interiors with visible casting seams.

Position the piece on a dark wood mantelpiece, a structured console table, or alongside leather-bound books on an open shelf to add historical texture and character.

Remove dust using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, ensuring no liquid cleaners, harsh detergents, or metal polishes are used, as these permanently damage the surface patination.
