Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tole peinte refers to painted and lacquered tinplate or sheet iron items produced primarily from the mid-eighteenth through the nineteenth century. Originating in France and later adopted across Europe and Britain, the process involved applying japanned lacquers and decorative hand-painted designs to rust-prone metal objects.

Traditional toleware was constructed from cold-rolled sheet iron coated with tin to prevent corrosion. Artisans applied multiple layers of asphaltum-based varnish or oil paint to create a smooth, durable finish, often finishing pieces with gilded borders or decorative painted motifs.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically show natural age-related wear, such as subtle craquelure, paint loss near rim edges, and mild oxidisation on exposed underside metal. Genuine period items feature hand-applied decorative borders and exhibit heavy rolled edges or crimped seams rather than uniform modern machine stamped profiles.

A tole tray can serve as a functional base for anchoring smaller decorative objects on an ottoman, coffee table, or sideboard. Alternatively, mounting the tray on a wall surface creates a focal point that highlights decorative lacquering and historical paintwork.

Clean painted iron items using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid water, liquid detergents, and abrasive polishes, as moisture can cause rust to form under chipped paint layers; applying a light coat of microcrystalline wax provides surface protection.
