Antique Silver Pair Cased Verge Fusee Pocket Watch, Underhill of Newport

The watch has a verge movement which is working nicely. Highly decorative pierced balance clock with foliate detail and a sun to the centre, and turned pillars. The movement is signed Underhill, Newport... William Underhill of Newport (which came under Shropshire at that time) was listed as a watch and clock maker who traded from 1790 to 1831. A Victorian watch key is included.

The watch measures 50mm excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the case back for Birmingham 1815, together with a maker's mark for the Coventry case maker William Howard who registered the mark in 1813. The case is in good condition. The case back has the engraved initials FC.

The watch glass has small marks across it but is very acceptable.

The white enamel dial has some damage around the centre and a faint hairline between 10 and 11. The minute hand is possibly a later replacement.

The outer case has the same hallmarks as the watch case, and it also has the same FC initials to the back. Again, the outer case is in very nice condition.

Also included are two service papers including one from William Underhill.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
