Antique Swedish Inlaid & Marquetry Cylinder Top Desk

1900 - 1920
Description

Very elegant antique Swedish cylinder top desk in a Neoclassical style & with some wonderful details. It’s rosewood, satinwood, kingwood & other exotic woods. This bureau is in good original condition & I would date it to around the 1920-30’s period. It’s of extremely high quality. All the drawers are finely dovetailed, well constructed & have solid timber drawer bottoms. One very unusual feature behind the rosewood back is the secret compartment in the back (see images), where it unlocks & reveals secret compartments. The interior behind the cylinder is beautifully fitted out with many drawers, two compartments & a central cupboard with more marquetry. There is a pull out writing surface & a one long drawer below. The grain & patterns of the woods are fabulous. There are many inlays, swags, etc. & the marquetry is exquisite. There are three marquetry panels, one on the cylinder & two on the sides. Please enlarge all the images, because I couldn’t possibly describe everything. The tapered legs are rosewood & satinwood, ending with brass feet. One of many signs of quality are the way that the legs are finished on all four sides. Whoever made this item, had a very keen eye for detail & didn’t take any short cuts.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
