A fine mahogany and handsome bell-chiming bracket clock.
The substantial six pillar triple fusee eight-day movement has a verge escapement regulated by a short bob pendulum and a well-engraved backplate with a retaining clasp for the pendulum for travel. It has an hour strike and chimes the quarters on a graduated nest of eight bells. There is a pull-repeat cord for the chime.
The pad-top shallow break-arch case has fine mahogany veneers.
The sides have scroll pierced wooden frets to the frieze over silk-backed brass sound frets, and large brass handles. The rear has the conforming wooden fretwork frieze over a glazed break-arch door.
The 8 inch square silvered brass dial has an engraved Roman chapter ring with Arabic five minutes to the outer track and it is signed Thomas Wagstaffe, LONDON. There is a square date aperture to the centre, and a strike/silent lever at 3 o’clock.
This clock has the original matching fine pierced blued steel hands, along with cast brass bracket feet and pineapple finial mounts.
Thomas Wagstaff (1724-1802), began his life and career in Banbury, Oxfordshire before moving to London circa 1756. Between 1756 and 1793 he worked at Carey Street, London and Gracechurch Street, London. As well as making complex and, frequently, musical clocks, he was renowned for his watches. Examples of his work are included in Metropolitan Museum of Art, Virginia Museum and the Ilbert Collection.
