Pristine Pair Antique French Embroidered Face Screens - Gilded Frames

Description

An absolutely stunning pair of nineteenth century face screens, an important accessory for every smart home during the period, to prevent the waxy cosmetics from melting in front of the open fires.

The frames and handle of this pair are beautifully gilded with a fine rope wrapping itself around.

One side of the screen is beautifully embroidered with a Greek key border and an exquisite floral central wreath. The other side is silk covered and again beautifully decorated with embroidery and including the initials J P.

The edge is finished in a multi-coloured silk cord with a finer cord bowed to the front with silk tassels hanging; quite exceptional all round, this pair must have been tucked away for much of their 150 years.

Perfect in every way, each measures 17" in length the screens measuring 8" x 8".
