Rosewood and Brass Inlaid Regency Campaign Writing Slope

19th century
Description

A very good Regency Period Rosewood and Brass Inlaid Campaign Writing Slope with a rising section containing four drawers with lion’s head ring handles and leather lined slopes. When first opened the rising section is just visible but secured with two sliding bolts. This can be raised and is supported by sprung side flaps and once the superior slope is opened this reveals a false platform which can be removed to reveal a further void and the spring loaded fascia can be released by inserting a pin into the hole on the r.h. corner just above the false platform. This reveals three further small drawers and the box has inset brass carrying handles to the sides.

Inscribed into the bottom of the rising section is the name and address; Richard Stephens, 56 Gt Marelebone St, Port Land Place. See London Street Directory 1843, Stephens, Richard (Of Marsala), Merchant. Robson Street Directory in 1832 has 56 GMS as Lamb, S and Dearlove, Agnes, Tobacconist. One of the rising section drawers has the name and address: GG Vernon, Netherton, Nr. Ledbury and this would have been the hamlet of Netherton near Elmley Castle in Worcestershire rather than the much larger Netherton near Birmingham. There are also various papers etc and notes all from the Ledbury area with the box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
