Antique Mahogany Brass Bound Writing Slope with Secret Drawers

19th century
Description

A lovely antique writing slope made of solid mahogany with brass corners, brass escutcheon and matching brass cartouche. Inside, the box is fitted with a good quality dark blue leather writing surface with greek-key tooled edge. There is also a pen tray and two glass inkwells. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding three small drawers which springs open when the pen tray pushes against the left hand piece of wood. There is also a side drawer with recessed military style handle which is released by lifting a small brass pin.

By repute, and documented on an old label inside the box "this portable desk or 'writing slops' was made in Edinburgh & belonged to Thomas Junior, writer to H.M.Exchequer 1780-1827. It cost 45/- when new in 1820"

It is in excellent condition for its age but we do not have a key. The brass has been lightly polished and it displays very well inside and out. There are no major damages to the wood exterior and the patination is beautiful. It is clean and tidy inside with just a small split to the lid of one compartment and a small repaired chip to the corner or the writing surface. There are some small knocks and minor signs of age and use but nothing that affects the overall appearance of the box.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions please ask. Nationwide delivery £15.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
