What can only be described as a quentessential Arts and Crafts solid silver box. This rectangular box represents all that the arts & crafts movement aspired to: Simple, useful, hand made craftmanship! This beautiful box has a planished (hammered) finish with an oval shaped empty cartouch in the centre of the lid. The lid is hinged and opens and closes perfectly. When open a lovely lemony gilt finish is revealed. Hallmarks are clear and crisp on the inside lip of the box along with partial marks on the side of the lid for the London Assay office along with a date mark for 1915 and Lion Passant. The maker''s mark is also clearly visible for Charles Henry Dumenil. A very special antique box, fabulous proportions and a very good heavy gauge of silver.
