Georgian Shield Type Tavern Clock By Richard Francis

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Overton Clocks of Chesterfield ltd

An early period Tavern clock from around c1800 by Richard Francis of Attleburgh, Norfolk.
This early period shield type clock having an ebonised case with gilt highlighting to the door has a certain uncluttered elegance that is often missing from the later chinoiserie painted models.
The rear of the 38 inch dial a number of written statements from various clockmakers and dial painters who have worked on this clock over the years. the first date I can find is when the dial was repainted by a Mr Hall in 1810. In 1815 Richard Francis either overhauled or replaced the movement and then in 1844, the dial was restored again. The final date on the clock is by Glynis Overton in 2007.
These clocks are particularly rare due to the fact that they spent most of their working lives on the wall of a Tavern/Inn and (as you can imagine in the 19th Century) the conditions in these establishments were often rough. These clock were expected to work every day so that the local population could rely on them to catch the mail, or stagecoach on its way to London and it was not uncommon for these clocks to eventually fall off the wall of simply rot away. Surviving examples are now sort after, especially If they have evidence of its history written within the case.
The movement has the stamp for Francis and has been fully overhauled so that I can give a full three years guarantee
