Description

An unusual longcase clock in a fine but very retrained walnut frame and a hooded top. The name William Harris engraved on the plate. Harris was active in the second and third quarters of the 18th century in London. The whole of the mechanism has been exchanged in the late 19th century for a very fine, complicated Westminster Whittington chime, including quarters. The whole having been stripped down and totally rebuilt.
c. 1880
About five London clockmakers by the name of William Harris in the record books. From the style of the case this one is around 1760/1775.
The chime is Westminster/Whittington. Westminster quarters (originally called Cambridge quarters), was written in 1793 for a new clock in St Mary the Great in Cambridge and came into use in domestic clocks after the Great Clock at Westminster (Big Ben) was commissioned.
