In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
It stands on simple block feet and has an attractive carved frieze with central shell motif. The wood has a wonderful patina and has mellowed to a lovely rich colour.
It is in good condition throughout and is strong and sturdy. The panelled back is clean and the hinges are strong. The interior is generally clean and tidy. There has been a small area of old woodworm by one of the hinges which has resulted in a small corner of the lid being replaced at some time. There have been some repairs to a few old splits in the panels of the lid where it has shrunk slightly over time. There are general signs of age and use and some wear around the bottom of the legs but overall it displays very well. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
