Description

A good quality mid-19th century set of POSTAL SCALES by Sampson Mordan & Co., of London, in coromandel wood and complete with its full set of nine weights from quarter ounce to 12 ozs. Interesting original embossed list of postal charges to one side and signed by the maker to the main beam. 10.5ins wide.

*** Sampson Mordan (born 1790) was a British silversmith and co-inventor of the first "propelling" pencil. He went on to establish a very successful company making high quality silver items. He died in 1843 and the business was taken over by his sons: Augustus and Sampson Junior.
