GEORGE AUGUSTUS ELIOTT - LORD HEATHFIELD GOVERNOR OF GIBRALTA - STIPPLE ENGRAVING WITH SOME ETCHING STATE BEFORE TITLE ADDED - NOVEMBER 1788 AFTER THE ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS 1787 - ENGRAVED BY RICHARD EARLOM 1743 - 1822 - Framed size 67 X 52.5 cms Total Image 54 x 40 cms Plate mark 51 X 38 cms - This is a fine original engraving from the reign of King George III. - In 1775 George Augustus Eliott (1717 – 1790) was appointed Governor of Gibralta. During the siege of 1779 – 1783 he held the British fortress against Spanish attack and was made Baron Heathfield in 1787. - He is shown during the siege symbolically holding the key to the fortress, with a view to the peninsular and Straits of Gibraltar in the background. A cannon points steeply down towards the sea and the sky is dark with the smoke of battle. He is wearing the ribbon and star of the Order of Bath. - The portrait was commissioned from Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1787 by the print publisher John Boydell. This engraving was then made by Richard Earlom and published by Boydell in Nov. 1788. Richard Earlom was an English mezzotint engraver, he was born and died in London. - Example of this print are held in the collections of: The National Portrait Gallery, British Museum, Governor's Residence, The Convent, Gibraltar - Original engraving presented in good original burr maple frame. - Both the engraving and frame are in good condition commensurate with their age.
